Are You Doing These Three Important Home Grooming Procedures?

Most dog owners are surprised when we ask what sort of home grooming they do. After all, aren’t you visiting Lucky Dog Grooming so we handle that? While we get the big stuff, we think of dog grooming as a preventative health measure—sort of like how your dentist tells you to keep brushing and flossing every day! While we hope you stop in every few weeks for professional dog grooming in Littleton, here are the three home grooming procedures we suggest for all pet owners.

1. Brushing. This classic dog grooming procedure can save time and money on your grooming appointment by making sure your dog is mat-free! We charge more for mats because they are very hard to remove, especially without hurting your dog. We spend up to four times as long de-matting a dog than we do grooming an unmatted dog, and the dogs are much happier when they are not matted. Even better, regular brushing promotes hair growth and clears away allergy-inducing dander. Ask at your next appointment about the best styles of brushes or combs for your dog’s unique coat.

2. Nail care. While we cut nails at every appointment, some dogs grow nails faster than others and may need trims in-between. In this case, you can stop by for a quick trim, or ask us to show you how to cut nails using a pet nail-clipper. Even if you aren’t comfortable trimming your dog’s nails by yourself, you should still check your dog’s nails regularly for breaks or jagged parts.

3. Brush their teeth! Okay, this might not be a grooming procedure, but it is an important doggy-maintenance step. Your dog can get cavities, dental decay, and even loose teeth, just like you can! Fortunately, there are plenty of doggy toothbrushes and toothpastes that can fight this disease. While the most health-conscious dog owners brush their pet’s teeth daily, at least once a week is fairly effective to prevent doggy dental problems.
